Our Work

Professional Development

Underlying all of our work is a commitment to learning and development, and to dissemination.

In conjunction with our research and consultancy offers we therefore also offer a range of public professional development programmes and events. These are deliberately designed to share what we have learned—our theories and practices—with others who have an interest in our work, and who, should they choose to apply what they learn from our programmes, may extend the Institute’s reach.

Our current professional development offers include:

  • The Advanced Organisational Change and Consulting programme offers education and development for people whose current positions require mastery of organisational change, group development or technological innovation. This part-time, two-year professional opportunity can be taken as a Master of Arts degree, a Postgraduate Diploma (both awarded by City University, London) or the Institute’s own Qualification.
  • A certificated modular course in Coaching for Leadership and Professional Development designed for experienced coaches, and other professionals whose role requires coaching competence. This course has been highly successful - we are now recruiting for 2009.
  • Group Relations conferences, including our key conference, the international Leicester conference: Authority, Role & Organisation held annually in April/May since 1957. These conferences significantly influence leadership issues in groups, organisations, communities and society. The Tavistock Institute also runs group relations conferences for specific groups and organisations and supports other conferences around the world. For more information on group relations conferences, visit www.grouprelations.com
  • Bespoke leadership development programmes; each of these is designed specifically to meet the requirements of the particular organisational client, which we may either deliver or enable them to deliver.

We also provide tailored individual and team coaching to members of organisations; because we bring a whole-systems perspective to all of our work, we regard these assignments as an aspect of our Consultancy offer.

Be sure to read our cancellation policy carefully before enrolling.

Mirror, mirror on the wall: using systems psychodynamics to understand the relationship between politics, fear and policy-making

We are living in peculiar political times. Western societies face major challenges from global warming to ageing populations, from global economic changes to the nexus of issues generally encapsulated by phrases such as “religious fundamentalism” and “the terrorist threat”. Yet as we grapple with these daunting political challenges, trust in politicians and politics is plummeting and people are less and less engaged in and with the political process.
