Ambitious aims, though in the domain of learning and professional development the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations is interested in and works hard to achieve just that, designing and developing courses which enable individuals to understand and experience themselves and others within the context of complex systems and enabling them to impact change. We invited Dr Simon Western, author of Leadership, A Critical Text to present at one of our lunchtime talks, this was an opportunity for staff and associates to find out more about an Eco-Leadership apprach and to offer critical input to some of the theoretical concepts that inform its design and to how they link and work with existing and emerging Tavistock thinking from the anthologies to complexity theory and the arts.

As well as Institute staff and associates, in attendance was a client from the financial sector and a Visiting Scientist, who works with social activist organisations around global women’s rights. Simon gave an overview of where Eco-Leadership sits in the context of other leadership discourses and this was followed by a lively and challenging question session with keen interest on the political dimensions of leadership; the challenges of proposing a new discourse of leadership; leading versus managing; and the role of activists in informing the direction of the contemporary organisation.

The talk was filmed and this page aims to share with you outputs from the talk including audio and video clips and the powerpoint presentation.
